Context

The practice of architecture is often not only fostered, but also directed and conditioned by the quality and nature of academia. In the Indian context, academia and practice have been seen as non-overlapping domains - they are placed sequentially and conducted independent of each other in time and physicality (institute versus studio).

Architecture Institutes design academic programmes that respond to their vision of the architectural practice. Usually, there are two approaches - the phenomenal (pragmatic/physical) and the noumenal (ideological/metaphysical). In doing so, the conditioning of the practice remains largely incomplete because in essence, practice needs both.

The ideation inclined approach falls short while embodying conceptual ideas into physical presences and great ideas get diluted and lost in translation to reality. Their pragmatic cognizance often fails to be vivid.

Professionals also struggle to take ideological positions to address complex issues and thereby their interpretation into architecture into the built form.

Response

As a response to the above context, a master-level Degree programme called the International Practice in Habitat Design has been conceived by The Design Village institute in association with architecture studio Archohm.

Through simultaneous experiences in academia and practice, the pedagogy does not nestle in either domains. The correlation between theory/ideation and pragmatic/reality checks, remain the focus of the programme. Learning therefore is echoed and mirrored through real world projects and their academic reflections.

The programme also attempts to give an intense international experience of the practice of architecture through curated travels, workshops and an internship at an international practice. This is done to expose students to cross-cultural collaborations, understanding attributes of global practices with respect to ideologies, typologies as well as best practices followed in the profession.

  1. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE - Aspirants are required to submit an SOP of 500 words explaining their motivation to join this program. (via email)
  2. PORTFOLIO – Through a selection of five projects, pupils will be assessed on their ability to analyse observations from multiple perspectives and draw inferences. Taking positions and building an argument on issues and its communication will be considered. (via email)
  3. INTERVIEW - The pupils will be invited for a comprehensive and rigorous discussion with the core team.(online)

  1. The fee may be paid by a Demand Draft / Cheque in favor of “The Design Village Foundation”, payable at Delhi

FEE RULES

  • The fee is inclusive of all taxes.
  • We highly recommend the international semester. However, If any pupil does not wish to pursue it, there would be a total reduction of INR 1,00,000 for the semester.
  • The International semester includes the cost of an international workshop and curated travel. The fee is exclusive of International tickets and visa, internship boarding and lodging. These would be on actuals by pupils.
  • Registration fees is non-refundable.
  • Students are requested to pay the semester fees within the stipulated time for admission confirmation.
  • Please note that institute will levy a charge of Rs. 5000 towards dishonoured cheques.
  • The Institute reserves the right to increase the fee towards any course of study at the beginning of the subsequent academic year of the course.

FAQs

HOW IS IPHD DIFFFERNT FROM A JOB, AN INTERNSHIP AND AN ACADEMIC STUDIO COURSE?

The International Practice in Habitat Design has been conceived for professionals.

The learning environment is a cohabitation of the atelier and institutional spaces within the same ecosystem.

Industry mentors (professionals and international partners of Studio Archohm, currently working on the project typology) and academic mentors from the Design Village work in conjunction to bridge the gap between theory and practice; serendipitous and deliberate interactions with colleagues from Archohm and students at The Design Village, coupled with charrettes, masterclasses, star lectures and a carefully curated set of theoretical modules interpose the atelier mind-set.

 

It is different from a Job/Internship at the Studio because –

  • IPHD IS LEARNING FOCUSED NOT PROJECT FOCUSED - The focus is on learning outcomes for the pupil and not on project deliverables for the studio.
  • PARALLEL PEDAGOGY – There is a parallel pedagogical and Institutional layer of reflections and triggers that fuel the project.
  • GUIDED BY THE PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT AND THE DESIGN TEAM – Emphasis is laid on direct and consistent interaction with the Design Team.

 

It is different from an Academic Studio Course because –

 

  • PUPILS AS PROFESSIONALS – There is a professional mind-set despite the academic context. There is collective responsibility and no fear of judgment for individual projects.
  • EMPHASIS ON REAL LIFE – Through introduction of intense and spontaneous real-life elements and constraints throughout the project, the pupil get a learning experience that is rooted in reality.
  • STUDIO PROJECT DONE IN A PROFESSIONAL ENVIRONMENT –The studio project is nestled in a studio environment with interaction with colleagues and peers.
